BAGHDAD (Reuters) - United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon arrived in Baghdad on Thursday on an unannounced visit to Iraq, Iraqi state television channel said.

A government source said that Ban was expected to meet with Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki in the fortified and U.S.-controlled Green Zone.

It was Ban's first visit to Iraq.

Last week, Ban unveiled the "International Compact with Iraq" in which he appealed for international support for a five-year Iraq reconstruction plan.

"The compact should be seen as a tool for unlocking Iraq's own potential," Ban told the compact meeting last week. "The challenges ahead are immense. I am sure you will all agree that we cannot leave Iraq on its own to cope with them."
