DoCoMo, Hutch Essar scrap mobile Internet alliance

TOKYO May 7 (Reuters) - Japan's NTT DoCoMo Inc. (9437.T) said on Monday it had scrapped a plan to offer its wireless Internet technology to Hutchison Essar as Britain's Vodafone Group Plc (VOD.L) is set to buy a majority stake in the Indian mobile phone carrier.

DoCoMo, Japan's top mobile-phone operator, and Hutchison Essar in December forged a deal to license DoCoMo's i-mode mobile Internet service in India. Vodafone, the world's biggest wireless operator, offers an i-mode rival service Vodafone Live!.

"India is an attractive market and we want to continue to look for other opportunities to offer i-mode in that country," said a DoCoMo spokesman.

Last month, India regulators approved Vodafone's $11.1 billion plan to buy a majority stake in Hutchison Essar, India's fourth-largest mobile carrier, from Hong Kong-based Hutchison Telecommunications International Ltd. 2332.HK HTX.N.
