NEW YORK Aug 16 (Reuters) - A section of Sunoco Inc's (SUN.N) oil refining complex in Philadelphia had a power outage late Wednesday, the independent northeast U.S. refiner said.

The power outage at about 4:45 p.m. EDT (2045 GMT) Wednesday afternoon resulted in some stack and flaring activity, a Sunoco official said in a recorded message on the Sunoco Philadelphia Refinery Hotline.

"The operators are working on correcting the situation and hope to have it under control very quickly but in the interim flaring will continue," the message added.

Company officials were not immediately available for comment on Thursday.

Sunoco's Philadelphia refinery is divided into the Girard Point section, which has a crude distillation capacity of 200,000 barrels per day, and the Point Breeze section, which can process 140,000 bpd of crude in two units -- one 50,000 bpd and one 90,000 bpd.
