Caraco gets FDA nod to sell generic hyperthyroidism drug

Sept 26 (Reuters) - Caraco Pharmaceutical Laboratories Ltd CPD.A said U.S. health regulators granted final approval to sell generic Methimazole tablets, in the 5mg and 10mg strengths, used to treat hyperthyroidism.

Methimazole is sold under the brand Northyx by privately held Cedar Pharmaceuticals, which has a manufacturing and supply agreement with privately held Centrix Pharmaceutical Inc.

For the twelve months ended June 2007, Methimazole had annual sales of about $21 million, Detroit-based Caraco said, citing data tracking company IMS Health. (Reporting by Dhanya Skariachan in Bangalore)
