ROME Oct 23 (Reuters) - Italian police arrested 17 members of a mafia clan that operated in Canada and cities across Italy in a pre-dawn operation on Tuesday, police said.

The Rizzuto clan, linked to the notorious Cuntrera Caruana family that played a key role in drug trafficking, is accused of mafia and financial crimes such as insider trading, using illicit funds for financial transactions in Switzerland and market-rigging.

In 2004, it also tried obtaining part of a contract to build a bridge across the Strait of Messina between Sicily and mainland Italy.

Police said they deployed 250 officers to track down and arrest the suspects including the head of the clan, Vito Rizzuto, using an international crime law, introduced last year, for the first time.
