Glaxo says test on diabetes drug to support safety

LONDON | Wed Nov 14, 2007 12:49pm EST

LONDON (Reuters) - Drugmaker GlaxoSmithKline said further clinical trials would support for the safety of its diabetes drug Avandia, which U.S. regulators required on Wednesday to carry a black-box warning about the risk of heart attacks.

"GSK believes data from ongoing and future clinical trials will provide additional scientific support for both the benefit and safety of Avandia," it said in a statement.

"GSK has agreed to work with the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) to plan and carry out a clinical trial to further investigate the cardiovascular effects of Avandia."
