Allstate Powers Up Thousands of Texans With Wind Energy
The Good Hands Go Green with West Texas Wind Farm
IRVING, Texas, Nov. 28 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Two thousand Texas homesare getting wired into the wind grid with a green donation from AllstateInsurance Company. The insurer will provide enough clean, renewable, windenergy to power the equivalent of 2,000 Texas homes for one year by purchasing24.5 million kilowatts of wind energy from the Horse Hollow II wind energyfarm in West Texas.
Allstate has made a significant financial contribution to eco-energyorganization Carbonfund.org for the purchase of clean energy credits. Thesecredits are being used to fund wind energy for Texans and reforestationprojects in Kansas and Louisiana.
"Allstate and its agencies are positive contributors to the communities weserve," said Allstate Texas Region Field Vice President Rich Crist. "Allstateis an economic engine providing protection to thousands of Texans and thatengine impacts the environment."
Crist says Allstate will immediately begin to offset a portion of annualenergy usage at its corporate headquarters and business miles traveled invehicles through contributions to the reforestation and wind energy projects.
The purchase of clean energy credits helps offset the company's currentgreenhouse gas emissions, but Allstate says this is part of a growing, balanced approach to going green that includes real reductions.
In September, Allstate opened the doors on its first "LEED" certifiedoffice in Texas. The Houston building -- home to more than 400 Allstateemployees -- provides preferred parking for hybrid cars, motion-activatedlighting and water conserving bathrooms.
"LEED," or Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, certificationprovides independent, third-party verification that a building project meetsthe highest performance standards in key areas including environmental andhuman health, water savings and energy efficiency.
These efforts build on a variety of actions Allstate is taking to expandits environmental commitment. The company has programs in place promoting thesafety and health of its employees and customers; including test projects inOhio and Colorado that are providing incentives encouraging customers to signup for the virtually paperless Allstate(R) Easy Pay Plan. These incentives, while reducing the company's paper usage, are also creating additionalcorporate contributions to green energy programs including the Texas windenergy project.
