WHARTON, N.J., Dec. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Passing guru Tom Martinez has been
named a lead instructor for Football University, a new invitation-only
national training camp for elite high school and youth players. Martinez, who
has personally trained NFL quarterback Tom Brady since he was 13, and
continues to work with the Super Bowl-winning star today, will headline the
quarterback faculty at Football University. The camp, which will train
players in all positions, will take place January through June 2008 in 18
markets nationwide. Football University is developed by Sportslink, the
creators of the U.S. Army All-American Bowl.
Martinez has instructed quarterbacks during most of his 32 years of
football coaching. He is the mentor of Brady and works with him in the off
season. At age 13, Brady attended one of Martinez' quarterback camps and has
been with the coach ever since. During his time as a quarterback instructor,
Martinez has also worked with other top quarterbacks such as Oakland Raiders
quarterback JaMarcus Russell, the 2007 NFL No. 1 draft choice. For most of his
career, Martinez served as head football coach and offensive coordinator for
the College of San Mateo, where he earned more than 1,100 career victories,
the most of any community college coach in the history of California.
Martinez, 62, resides in San Jose, California, where he continues work as an
instructor as well as work with the College of San Mateo.
"Every kid I've taught or will teach will get exactly what Tom Brady got.
The kids at Football University will get that training too," said Martinez.
"The concepts and teaching techniques that Brady receives, and these kids
will, too, are practically identical. Some players take the teachings and
apply them and work them. Brady bought in to the system at age 13, and he has
been working it ever since."
In addition to Martinez, Football University will have more than 10 former
NFL instructors on staff. Larry Kennan, who is the founder and executive
director of the NFL Coaches Association, joins FBU bringing 30 years of
coaching experience, including tutoring NY Giant Eli Manning, N.O Saint Drew
Brees, and San Francisco 49er Alex Smith. Former NFL quarterback Steve DeBerg
brings his coaching expertise to FBU, including credentials of tutoring Dallas
Cowboys star Tony Romo. Additional faculty includes Pro Bowl running back/punt
returner Brian Mitchell; two-time Super Bowl winning defensive back Perry
Williams; former Green Bay Packer and punting/kicking guru Bill Benner; and
many others.
Football University will take place in the following 18 markets: San
Antonio, Houston, Dallas, Seattle, Phoenix, Raleigh (NC), Sacramento, Las
Vegas, San Jose, Denver, the New York metro area, Pittsburgh, Chicago, Ohio,
Boston, Washington DC, Philadelphia and Orlando. Football University will
scout and invite the top 100 high school and 100 youth football players in
each region.
Football University takes training camp beyond on-field instruction,
giving players access to tools usually reserved for professionals, including:
coaching from an elite group of NFL instructors; high-tech, cutting-edge
training equipment; video/film breakdown; position-specific strength training;
speed and agility training; and guest speakers. The professional instruction
and hi-tech training puts FBU students at the same level of their favorite NFL
players. For more information, please visit www.air7qbu.com.
