Renowned Quarterback Coach Steve Clarkson Joins DeBartolo Sports and Entertainment to Head the New DeBartolo Sports University
New Division Designed to Promote Amateur Athletes via Coaching and
Mentoring from the Pros
TAMPA, Fla.--(Business Wire)--DeBartolo Sports and Entertainment announced today that renowned
quarterback expert and coach Steve Clarkson has joined the
organization as President of its new amateur sports division,
DeBartolo Sports University.
DeBartolo Sports University focuses on bringing new young talent
to the forefront through unparalleled, first-class developmental
programs designed to promote amateur athletes and coaches by helping
them reach their potential through coaching and mentoring from the
pros. Their training and development experts have not only played and
coached at the highest professional level, but have trained some of
the most successful professional athletes.
Clarkson will lead the Sports University under the ownership of
Edward DeBartolo, Jr., who won five Super Bowls as the owner of the
San Francisco 49ers. His 49ers teams were built with first-class, Hall
of Fame players such as Joe Montana, Jerry Rice and Ronnie Lott; and
visionary coaches such as Bill Walsh, George Seifert, and others.
DeBartolo was widely recognized as the "players' owner," and DeBartolo
Sports University was created through this vision. Two of his former
players, 49ers greats Joe Montana and Jerry Rice, will be mentors.
"We are extremely excited to have Steve join our family,"
DeBartolo said. "With his expertise and track record on building young
athletes, we are looking forward to maximizing his goals with ours, in
building another success story for the DeBartolo group of companies."
"Mr. DeBartolo has a long tradition of winning and I am thrilled
to be joining his team," Clarkson said. "I look forward with great
anticipation to create something special with DeBartolo Sports
University."
Clarkson has been recognized by HBO Real Sports, ESPN The
Magazine, Business Week, and Bloomberg News as one of the nation's
utmost authorities on the quarterback position. Said ESPN The
Magazine: "Joe Montana entrusts both of his high school age sons to
Clarkson's tutelage. So did Jim Clausen, father to three Division
I-A QB's, (Notre Dame, LSU, Tennessee) who has called Clarkson 'a
dream maker.' "
Clarkson's success as a player and coach, combined with his own
personal relationships developed over the years, gives his students
professional insight and expertise. He has built a who's-who client
list, including NFL quarterbacks Ben Roethlisberger, Matt Leinart,
J.P. Losman and John Beck, running back Marshawn Lynch and several
Heisman Trophy winners.
A 1979 graduate of L.A. Wilson High School, Clarkson led his team
to three L.A. City Championships with a 39-1 record during three
seasons. He was named to the All-City teams during his Junior and
Senior seasons, and was the All-City Player of the Year in 1978 after
leading the state in passing yards and total offense. Clarkson was a
three year starter for San Jose State, where he holds several passing
records and was named to the Academic All-American teams in 1981 and
1982. He played for Jack Elway and current Arizona State coach Dennis
Erickson, who won two national championships before coaching the NFL's
Seattle Seahawks and San Francisco 49ers. Clarkson also played with
Saskatchewan in the CFL.
