Cinematographer scores historic double
LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - British cameraman Roger Deakins has become the first cinematographer to claim two feature nominations in one year for the American Society of Cinematographers's annual awards.
He was cited for his rendering of "No Country for Old Men" and "The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford," the group said Monday.
Also nominated were Robert Elswit for "There Will Be Blood," Janusz Kaminski for "The Diving Bell and the Butterfly" and Seamus McGarvey for "Atonement."
A majority of ASC feature contenders also often earn Oscar nominations, though the winner in each has frequently been different.
In the ASC competition, Deakins was previously nominated five times and won twice, for "The Shawshank Redemption" and "The Man Who Wasn't There." His two ASC-winning films also earned Deakins Oscar nominations, as did "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" "Kundun" and "Fargo."
Kaminski previously won Oscars for "Saving Private Ryan" and "Schindler's List," and an additional nomination for "Amistad." He also earned ASC nominations for the three titles.
Elswit earned one previous ASC nomination as well as an Oscar nomination for "Good Night, and Good Luck." This is the first ASC nomination for McGarvey.
The ASC Awards will be presented January 26 in Hollywood.
