Statement of David A. Raymond, President and CEO, American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC), on Release of the National Surface Transportation Policy and Revenue Study Commission Report

WASHINGTON--(Business Wire)--"The Commission did a good job in putting aside politics and
coming up with meaningful recommendations. They recognize the need for
a strong federal role, including a long overdue increase in the gas
tax; and that we need to use more tolling, congestion pricing, and
public-private partnerships as part of the overall funding solution.

The challenge today is similar to that which confronted President
Eisenhower some fifty years ago when he launched the Interstate
system. He deemed it a matter of national security, and vital to our
growing economy. Today, if we are to compete successfully in the
global marketplace and meet both economic and quality of life
concerns, we need a renewed emphasis on our transportation program.

Congress needs to consider the Commission's recommendations
carefully -- and act. The choice is now theirs as to whether America
gets a 21st century transportation system, or continues to fall into
the potholes of the last century."

The American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) is the
business association of America's engineering industry, representing
approximately 5,700 independent engineering companies throughout the
United States engaged in the development of America's transportation,
environmental, industrial, and other infrastructure. Founded in 1910
and headquartered in Washington, D.C., ACEC is a national federation
of 51 state and regional organizations.
