Canadian Carrier Increases Competitiveness and Delivers Differentiated
Offerings with Navitas IP-application Routing Directory
REDWOOD CITY, Calif., Jan. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Nominum, the leading
provider of network naming and addressing technologies, announced today that
TELUS selected Nominum's carrier-grade IP-application Routing Directory (IPRD)
Navitas as the foundation for growing its wholesale interconnect and peering
business as it accelerates the move from the traditional TDM network to IP.
Nominum Navitas enables TELUS to optimize its call and session routes while
creating new differentiated wholesale service offerings, resulting in reduced
interconnect costs, simplified operations and new sources of revenues.

With more than 10 million subscribers and a carrier-class IP network that
spans the country, TELUS Corporation is the second-largest carrier in Canada
and provides a wide range of wireline and wireless communications products and
services including data, Internet Protocol (IP), voice, video and
entertainment services. With the move to IP-based call routing, TELUS
experienced significant growth in its wholesale interconnect business for
domestic, North American and international voice traffic. TELUS needed to
leverage its existing investment in routing optimization analytics to execute
dynamic call routing optimization in the IP network. Because fast and
accurate application of the most up-to-date business rules directly impacts
profitability, the carrier needed the ability to quickly refresh this
information throughout the IP network - moving towards real-time cross-network
availability of interconnect routes.
"To improve our offering and control operating costs, we needed a solution
that enriched our network with route and numbering plan management, enforced
optimal routing policies consistently, and had the scalability to handle
current traffic and anticipated growth," said Brent Allison, VP Partner
Solutions Marketing for TELUS. "Navitas is an essential part of our
next-generation network and is a key element of our strategy of providing
differentiated services at competitive prices. More importantly, Navitas is
the foundation block of a network that will allow TELUS to be a key player in
the converged communication world ahead."
"The wholesale market is highly competitive, and carriers are under
continued pressure to evolve their offerings while keeping costs under
control," said Tom Tovar, chief executive officer of Nominum. "We are
delighted that TELUS selected Navitas to help improve its economical model for
VoIP peering and interconnects."
Nominum Navitas is an IP-application Routing Directory (IPRD), a
switch-agnostic signaling data repository that consolidates telephony
numbering and routing information, and refines routes based on session
parameters like cost, quality, capacity, and context. TELUS applied Navitas
as an IP-based network control point and relies on the following capabilities
for improving their business:
-- Eliminating data fragmentation across switching element routing tables
through consolidation of numbering and routing plans across IP and TDM
networks.
-- Signaling capabilities with SIP and ENUM queries.
-- Support for parameter-based routing including Least Cost Routing for
profitable and reliable routes.
The integration enabled TELUS to access optimal routes in its network in
real-time and make use of in-session route optimization, thereby maximizing
margins and preserving a high quality service.
