Committee To Save Our Black Catholic Schools Holds Rally to Protest Archbishop Wuerl's Speech Commemorating Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Archbishop Wuerl Orchestrated Converting of District's Black Catholic Schools WASHINGTON, Jan. 19 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- WHO: Catholic school parents, alumni, students and supporters. WHAT: The Archdiocese of Washington has decided to close seven Catholic schools, all predominantly African American, or turn them into public charter schools. Archbishop Wuerl is expected to use his MLK speech to insist that the black community supports this decision. That is not the case!!! The majority of the black community opposes converting or closing the schools because it will be detrimental to efforts to provide quality education to African American children. The Archdiocese needs two-thirds of the parishioners and parents at the targeted schools to support the conversion. He does not have that support, and our rally will help demonstrate the steadfast opposition to his plan. WHEN: Saturday, January 19 at 4:15 pm WHERE: St. Augustine Church, 2028 15th St. NW, (15th and V St.) Washington, DC CONTACT: Kathryn Allen 202-204-0600; 202-321-6890 Joe McKenzie 301-455-6631 Michael K.
