ISMAILIA, Egypt (Reuters) - Egyptian police shot dead a man from Ivory Coast and detained two other African migrants who were trying to cross illegally into Israel on Saturday, security officials said.

One official, speaking on condition of anonymity, identified the dead migrant as Cherif Lansana. He said Egyptian police shot the 22-year-old man after he ignored orders not to cross the border.

"He died on the barbed wire separating Egypt and Israel," the official told Reuters.

Security officials said Saber Mohamed, a 21-year-old Sudanese, was injured and an unidentified man from Guinea was detained during the same foiled attempt to cross into Israel.

Sinai is the main conduit for traffickers trying to take the mainly African migrants into the Jewish state for work or asylum.
