Nationalist wins first round in Serb vote: monitors
BELGRADE |
BELGRADE (Reuters) - A nationalist candidate won the first round of Serbia's presidential election on Sunday, according to monitors, setting up a run-off that will shape Serbian ties with the EU after the expected loss of Kosovo.
Results from independent monitors showed Tomislav Nikolic at 39.4 percent of the vote, not enough to win outright. He will face pro-Western President Boris Tadic, who took 35.4 percent, in a Feb 3 run-off.
The CESID independent monitoring organization released its results after counting over 90 percent of all votes cast in voting stations across Serbia. The state election commission will release its results from the same sample at 6:00 p.m. EST.
