Taiwan dollar weakens as stocks fall

TAIPEI | Sun Jan 27, 2008 8:31pm EST

TAIPEI Jan 28 (Reuters) - The Taiwan dollar fell on Monday as a drop in the share market, which took its cue from U.S. share performance on Friday, dampened overall market sentiment.

Taiwan's currency TWD=TP opened flat at Friday's close of T$32.300 to the U.S. dollar, but had dipped to T$32.335 by 0115 GMT. Volume on the main Taipei Forex was a moderate US$31 million at 0115 GMT.

"U.S. stocks didn't do great on Friday, so Taiwan stocks opened down," a currency dealer in Taipei said. "We need to watch stocks today. Today the currency will be a bit weak."

Taiwan stocks .TWII were down 0.52 percent on Monday, following Friday losses on Wall Street, amid caution over a slew of quarterly earnings this week from local technology firms. (Reporting by Ralph Jennings, editing by Ken Wills)
