Turk party asks top court to block headscarf reform
ANKARA |
ANKARA (Reuters) - Turkey's main opposition party said on Wednesday it had asked the Constitutional Court to quash a government-backed reform aimed at easing a ban on women students wearing the Muslim headscarf at university.
The staunchly secularist Republican People's Party (CHP) says the reform, already approved by parliament and the president, contradicts Turkey's secular constitution and will lead to an erosion of the separation of state and religion.
The ruling AK Party, which has Islamist roots, says the reform will boost individual freedoms in Turkey.
