FACTBOX: Vermont and its presidential primary

(Reuters) - Vermont is one of four states that hold what could be a decisive round of presidential primary contests on March 4.

Following are a few facts about the Green Mountain State:

* The rural state is famed for its picture-postcard views, dairy cows, maple syrup and liberal politics. Environmentally friendly businesses like Ben & Jerry's ice cream have honed the state's countercultural image.

* While neighboring New Hampshire has emphasized low taxes and a business friendly climate to attract new residents, Vermont has drawn educated liberals willing to pay relatively high taxes to live in a pristine setting.

* Polls open at varying times across the state, beginning at 6 a.m. (1100 GMT). Voting concludes at 7 p.m. EST (0000 GMT). Voters do not need to register as Republicans or Democrats to participate in either party's primary.

* Vermont is one of a handful of states that allow same-sex marriage.

* Sen. Bernie Sanders, an Independent, was first elected to Congress as a Socialist. Sen. Patrick Leahy, a Democrat, is a fan of the Grateful Dead.
