Cognos' performance management capabilities help a leading
telecommunications company monitor, measure and drive business
performance to optimize customer service and decision-making
BURLINGTON, Mass.--(Business Wire)--
Cognos today announced that TELUS has established IBM Cognos 8
Business Intelligence software as its enterprise-wide standard for
performance reporting, analysis, event and metrics management.

TELUS recently set out to simplify its business intelligence tools
into a single corporate-wide standard giving key team members a
complete and consistent view. It sought a single BI solution that
could easily pull and report on data from a wide variety of
heterogeneous systems and transform what was disparate data into
consumable performance information for improved business insight and
proactive business management.

Cognos' reporting, analysis, event management and scorecarding
capabilities were selected to serve as a holistic performance
management layer working in concert with the strategic investments
TELUS has already made in multiple key corporate data sources. These
data sources included SAP BW, IBM DB2 data server and other systems
with customer information. With Cognos' BI capabilities as the
standard reporting and analysis front-end, TELUS executives and
business managers will ultimately have a single, integrated view of
financial, sales, customer supply chain and marketing information.

"We originally went looking for a vendor to create a self-service
reporting environment giving us a snapshot view of all our strategic
sources of information. We needed the system to gather business
information from any place, at any time, without placing a huge burden
on IT for report creation and manual analysis. In cooperation with
TELUS' Business Intelligence Center of Excellence, Cognos' created a
solution presenting us with business information in a consumable
format through multi-faceted, customizable dashboards that reflect the
key performance indicators of our business," said Simon Gratton, TELUS
director of Business Transformation. "This enhancement will ensure key
decisions are made based on consistent and current business
information."

Today, members of the TELUS executive team as well as regional
management are actively tracking more than 100 core key performance
indicators across its distributed enterprise. These indicators were
selected based on their demonstrable impact on revenue and cost for
key areas such as service assurance, service fulfillment and customer
service. By streamlining its metrics based on a Balanced Scorecard
methodology and using IBM Cognos 8 Scorecarding, TELUS can proactively
monitor how it is servicing its customer base and quickly implement
appropriate actions based on actual performance against metrics or
ongoing trends.

IBM Cognos Go! Office and IBM Cognos 8 Analysis for Microsoft
Excel have also been implemented to help provide easier accessibility
to BI for business users. The solution is complemented by Appfluent's
Product Suite, which provides non-disruptive, comprehensive monitoring
and analysis of the TELUS BI/ Data Warehouse environment for TELUS to
monitor usage analytics and optimize the most imperative areas.

To help manage and support the strategic BI deployment across
corporate divisions and regions, TELUS established a world-leading
Business Intelligence Competency Center (BICC) with strong
cross-enterprise executive representation on its BI Council. The TELUS
BICC provides a body of centralized knowledge and the BI best
practices necessary to make broader business optimization goals a
possibility.

"TELUS has taken a calculated, comprehensive approach to its
performance management deployment and has created a shining example of
a world-class Business Intelligence Competency Centre that understands
BI as a strategic organizational imperative for business optimization
and can support, manage and champion deployment," said Dave Laverty,
vice-president, Worldwide Marketing, Business Intelligence and
Performance Management, Cognos. "We are honored to partner with TELUS
as they continue to unlock and consolidate business information to
reveal performance insights and speed decision making."
