ComEd's Proposal Deals $361 Million in Rate Hikes and Possibly Much More in Surcharges - AARP, Attorney General & CUB Join to Oppose What: With ComEd looking to nail consumers with $361 million in rate hikes and potentially much more in new surcharges, consumer groups are set to wage a fight. Public hearings on ComEd's proposal will start next week, and AARP, Attorney General Lisa Madigan's office, Citizen's Utility Board (CUB) and the Oakbrook Condo Assn., are joining forces tomorrow to oppose the increases and urge the Illinois Commerce Commission to do the same. The groups are calling on the public to speak up and make their voice heard. Who: Evelyn Gooden, President, Executive Council AARP Illinois David Kolata, CUB Executive Director Representative from Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan's Office Jerry Wolin, President, Oak Brook Condo Association When: Wednesday, April 2nd 10:00 AM Where: Blue Room James R. Thompson Center, 15th Floor 100 W. Randolph Street Chicago, IL 60601 Why: On top of the $361 million in rate hikes, ComEd is also seeking to implement several new surcharges, which they would be allowed to increase with minimal public input. The increases and surcharges will burden ComEd consumers in tight economic times, where many are already struggling with high utility costs, and undercut the billion dollar rate relief package won by consumers last year. If approved, ComEd's proposal will deal a serious blow to thousands of households, small businesses and older adults living on fixed incomes.
