Blackstone, CVC eye Mitchells & Butlers stake: paper

LONDON | Mon Mar 31, 2008 6:35am EDT

LONDON (Reuters) - Private equity firms Blackstone (BX.N) and CVC are mulling a plan to buy a "significant minority stake" in pubs group Mitchells & Butlers (MAB.L), the Sunday Times reported.

M&B put itself up for sale in January after a property deal with tycoon shareholder Robert Tchenguiz lost it 400 million pounds ($792 million), costing the firm's chairman and finance director their jobs.

However, difficulties in the credit markets have hampered private equity firms' ability to raise funds for a bid and the newspaper reported only one party had lodged a bid by a Friday deadline.

No one was available for comment at Blackstone, CVC or M&B.
