Implementation of Second Life Simulator, WindLight and Dazzle
Increases Stability, Usability, Realism and Rendering
SAN FRANCISCO--(Business Wire)--
Linden Lab(R), creator of 3D virtual world Second Life(R)
(www.secondlife.com), is releasing three technical upgrades that will
greatly improve overall user experience on the Second Life Grid
platform(R). The Second Life Simulator is a physics engine that will
significantly reduce region crashes and improve the overall
reliability of simulations and avatar- and object-based movement.
WindLight, an advanced atmospheric rendering technology, will increase
the clarity and visual quality of the Second Life viewer, enhancing
the overall realism of the virtual environment. Finally, Dazzle will
modernize the look and feel of Second Life's user interface (UI),
making navigation brighter, more accessible and intuitive.
Second Life Simulator
An update to the physics engine that resides in Linden Lab's data
centers, the Second Life Simulator will increase the reliability of
the Second Life Grid by greatly reducing movement-oriented downtime.
The Simulator, previously known as the Havok(R) upgrade project, will
increase the speed in which 3D movement -- such as collisions and
gravity -- are rendered, alleviating strain on Second Life servers and
significantly reducing simulator crash rates.
WindLight
Based on real-world physics calculations and offering new lighting
and graphics rendering capabilities, WindLight grants users of the
Second Life Grid an unparalleled level of control over how the world
looks, moves and feels. In addition to enhancing visual quality and
improving the overall performance of the Second Life viewer, WindLight
also opens new doors for creative expression, brand development and
content creation.
Dazzle
Dazzle represents both an aesthetic and usability upgrade to the
current Second Life UI, enabling quicker, more efficient search
through the use of modern graphics and iconography. Equally beneficial
for long-time Residents and new users, Dazzle makes the Second Life
Grid more approachable, searchable and ultimately more navigable.
"Improving the reliability, usability and realism of the Second
Life Grid are three of our primary and ongoing objectives," said Joe
Miller, Vice President of Platform and Technology Development, Linden
Lab. "These upgrades will greatly improve Residents' experience with
and immersion within the virtual environment."

About The Second Life Grid
The Second Life Grid is a sophisticated development platform
created by Linden Lab, a company founded in 1999 by Philip Rosedale,
to create a revolutionary new form of shared 3D experience. The former
CTO of RealNetworks, Rosedale pioneered the development of many of
today's streaming media technologies, including RealVideo. In April
2003, noted software pioneer Mitch Kapor, founder of Lotus Development
Corporation, was named Chairman. Based in San Francisco, Linden Lab
employs a senior team bringing together deep expertise in physics, 3D
graphics and networking.
