New AMO-Family of Materials Reduce Bacterial Transfer in Medical
Facilities
WOBURN, Mass.--(Business Wire)--
Madico, Inc., the industry's leading provider of films for safety
and security, energy conservation, renewable energy, and hygienic
applications, today announced a suite of antimicrobial laminates
designed to resist bacterial growth in medical facilities. The new
Madico AMO(TM)-branded films help reduce the risk of secondary - or
nosocomial - infections to patients in healthcare settings. According
to the Center for Disease Control, nosocomial infections affect as
many as 1.7 million patients per year and increase the average
hospital stay by nearly $40,000.
The suite consists of three antimicrobial laminates, AMO-TS(TM),
AMO-MS(TM) and AMO-400(TM). Developed for touch screen manufacturers,
the rugged AMO-TS material destroys harmful surface bacteria while
safeguarding the screen against abrasion. AMO-MS, named for the $500M
(US) membrane switch market it serves, improves the adhesion of common
manufacturing inks used in the printed circuits while incorporating an
antimicrobial top coating. Madico has also developed an end-user
product, called AMO-400. Without any training, facility workers can
apply his film to virtually any surface - such as countertops, sinks,
walls, tables - to prevent the transfer of bacteria and other
pathogens. The films are replaced as needed based on the degree of
wear and traffic.
Although medical centers and hospitals have been the first to
adopt this new product set, Madico plans to market the antimicrobial
laminates to other sectors as well. According to Frank Mannarino,
Business Manager for Madico Specialty Films, "Healthcare providers are
not the only professionals affected by the spread of bacteria. Food
processors are threatened by contaminants, such as e. Coli. High-touch
devices such as bank machines, self-checkout scanners as well as
airport and subway kiosks also present significant bacterial threats
to the general public. We envision a very large market for our new
materials."
All AMO products share a common active ingredient, ionic silver.
Outside testing has revealed ionic silver to be less toxic than table
salt and less irritating than talcum powder. It is registered with the
EPA and listed with the FDA. For pricing and availability, contact
