LENOX, MA, Apr 10 (MARKET WIRE) --
Most doctors won't recommend vitamin supplements to their patients,
saying there is no scientific proof that they actually work, but new
research shows that spending just pennies a day on a few key nutritional
supplements can dramatically reduce sickness and chronic disease -- and
greatly decrease health care costs as a result.

"Based on the research, I strongly believe that we should all be taking
certain
basic nutritional supplements," said Mark Hyman, M.D. of UltraWellness. "The
cost is low,
the benefit is high, and the risk is non-existent for these vitamin
supplements."

Researchers from the Lewin Group looked at four key areas of research
whichexamined the use of dietary supplements, and determined that:

-- Providing Medicare-age citizens with 1,200 mg of calcium and 400 IU of
vitamin D would result in reduced bone loss and fewer hip fractures,
preventing 776,000 hospitalizations and saving $16.1 billion in health care
    costs.
-- Giving the Medicare population about 1,800 mg of omega-3 fats a day
would prevent 374,000 hospitalizations from heart disease over five years
with Medicare savings of $3.2 billion
-- Taking 6-10 mg of lutein and zeaxanthin daily would help 190,000
individuals avoid dependent care and save $3.6 billion over five years.
-- If only 11.3 million women began taking 400 mcg of folic acid on a
daily basis before conception, neural tube birth defects could be prevented
in 600 babies with $344,700,000 saved in lifetime health care costs and
$1.4 billion saved over 5 years.

"Vitamin deficiency may cause long-latency deficiency diseases which
include conditions like blindness, osteoporosis, heart disease, cancer,
diabetes,
dementia, and more," said Hyman. "These vitamin supplements, which cost pennies
a day,
can improve immunity, cognitive function, and mood and produce a combined
savings of $24 billion in health care costs over five years."
