Hitachi HDD unit says to improve business by itself

TOKYO, April 17 | Wed Apr 16, 2008 9:56pm EDT

TOKYO, April 17 (Reuters) - Hitachi Ltd's (6501.T) hard drive unit plans to turn around its business on its own, Hitachi Global Storage Technologies Chief Executive Hiroaki Nakanishi said on Thursday.

That represents a shift in strategy for the unit.

Hitachi had been seeking outside help for the hard disk drive business but last month it broke off talks with U.S. private equity firm Silver Lake about selling a stake in the unit. (Reporting by Mayumi Negishi)
