OJSC MegaFon is a pan-Russian mobile operator. It operates in the GSM 900/1800
frequency ranges. It was established in May 2002 as a result of the combination
of Closed Joint-Stock Company North-West GSM with nine other companies in the
Russian Federation, and the adoption of the common name and brand of "MegaFon".
Its principal shareholders are OJSC "Telecominvest", OJSC "CT-Mobile", and
TeliaSonera, the major Finnish/Swedish telecommunications company. Its license
area covers all 83 regions of the Russian Federation with a population of
approximately 145 million. As of the end of March 2008, the number of its
subscribers exceeded 36 million.
