HARARE (Reuters) - Zimbabwe opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai on Thursday called for South African President Thabo Mbeki to be removed as a mediator in the country's crisis.

"President Mbeki needs to be relieved from his duty," Tsvangirai told a news conference in Johannesburg, adding that Zimbabwean leader Robert Mugabe had "unleashed an orgy of violence against the people".

Mbeki last year led an unsuccessful mediation mission by the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and has played down the gravity of a deadlock following an election on March 29.
