INDIANAPOLIS, May 20 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Eli Lilly and Company
(NYSE: LLY) today announced that it will provide $1.1 million in relief for
victims of this month's two major Asian disasters, a powerful earthquake that
caused massive destruction to the Sichuan Province in China May 12, and a
cyclone that ravaged the southern coastal area of Myanmar 10 days earlier.
"The devastation caused by these two natural disasters is unimaginable,"
said Robert L. Smith, president of the Lilly Foundation. "We hope Lilly's
contributions will help ease some of the suffering caused by these two tragic
situations and aid in the recovery efforts."
Relief for China
In China, Lilly will donate a total of $1 million to relief efforts. This
donation includes $800,000 in much-needed medicines - mainly antibiotics in
the near term, and possibly insulin and mental health medications longer term.
The Lilly Foundation also is directing cash contributions of $100,000 to
Project HOPE and $75,000 to Mercy Corps, and is setting aside another $25,000
to match employee donations. Matching employee funds will be donated to the
American Red Cross China Relief Fund.
Relief for Myanmar
The Foundation also has pledged $100,000 in U.S. cash contributions to
Save the Children and World Vision, two relief agencies that are positioned to
assist victims in Myanmar.
