FACTBOX: Tech execs run, ride, recycle
NEW YORK (Reuters) - With the technology industry reconsidering how much energy it uses and whether it can find ways to live greenly (see story <ID:nN21445323>), executives attending the Reuters Global Technology, Media and Telecoms Summit this week were asked to describe what they are doing in their own lives to reduce their carbon footprint.
Here are some of their answers:
RICK SIMONSON, CFO, NOKIA (NOK1V.HE)(NOK.N):
"One of my daughters just went vegan. We literally went and tried to figure out what's the carbon footprint of that. So I'm learning."
MIKE SPLINTER, CEO, APPLIED MATERIALS (AMAT.O):
"My kids think I'm nuts now because I'm changing every light bulb in our home to compact fluorescents. What I'm finding is that you never go and count all your light bulbs until you're actually going to change them all. I first counted the ones we used the most and got to 50 and found another 100 light bulbs that are all over the place.
"My wife is driving a Prius, my daughter is driving a Prius. I call my wife now the heating and cooling police."
BILL WATKINS, CEO, SEAGATE STX.N:
"I'm actually doing nothing ... I get on a private jet and fly to New York, so it's kind of hard for me to talk about separating my cans from plastic.
"They came to me and asked me to buy a Prius. I have a long commute. They actually wanted me to convert to a full electric car. I drive a Bentley. This is the car of my life, the love of my life is the Bentley. ... I'll be honest, I couldn't do it."
DAN SCHULMAN, CEO, VIRGIN MOBILE USA VM.N:
"If you have kids and you're not being as globally aware as possible, you fall rapidly down the "father-of-the-year" award totem pole. So (we do) everything from turning off lights to just being aware of all the different machines we have on, all of the charging stuff that we have."
ENRIQUE SALEM, COO, SYMANTEC (SYMC.O):
"I don't drive to work as much as I used to because I get to telecommute more than I used to. ... I live 60 miles from work and so if I can work remotely, given all the technologies I now have available, that reduces the amount of time that we spend in the car."
JOHN LILLY, CEO, MOZILLA:
"I use the Internet an order of magnitude more than I did 10 years ago. I spend more time on the Internet than I do in my car. I see that increasingly, more and more I find myself using lower and lower power devices."
JASON KILAR, CEO, HULU (GE.N)NWSa.N:
"I'm a runner so I don't like to take a car, which is very odd since I live in Los Angeles. I chose to live very close to the office to not spend a lot of time in a car. I try not to ever drive on the weekend -- I just don't think it's something that I personally look forward to."
DIANE GREENE, CEO, VMWARE (VMW.N):
"I drive a hybrid car and I ride my bike when I can. I recycle and I try not to consume if I don't need something at this point. I do sometimes (ride a bike to work). I did last Monday."
