VIDEO: Troops deployed in S Africa

May 22 - South African soldiers have been deployed in Johannesburg for the first time in a bid to quell attacks on foreigners that have killed dozens and forced thousands to flee.

A top African National Congress leader criticised police for reacting too slowly to almost two weeks of attacks on African migrants. More than 10,000 Mozambicans have fled from South Africa to escape xenophobic attacks. Zimbabwean opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai, who's in South Africa, says he will return to Zimbabwe and work to end the political crisis that has caused millions to flee his country. Some 3 million Zimbabweans have fled to neighbouring South Africa in recent years. The influx of millions of African migrants has prompted a backlash from poor South Africans, who accuse them of stealing jobs and fueling crime.SOUNDBITES:
