Aviva eyes up to 1,800 job cuts by 2010 in UK

LONDON, June 6 (Reuters) - Britain's largest insurer Aviva Plc (AV.L) could cut up to 1,800 jobs by the end of 2010 as part of an overhaul of its UK general insurance operations, the group said on Friday.

Aviva had said last year it planned to increase savings from its domestic business and would redesign its operations and simplify processes, but the group had not detailed job cuts. Trade union Unite said news of the 1,500 to 1,800 redundancies was "truly devastating".

"The union now has serious questions about how Aviva will be able to deliver on their commitment to 'One Aviva Twice the Value' with one more round of brutal job cuts," Graham Goddard, deputy general secretary of Unite, said. (Reporting by Clara Ferreira-Marques; Editing by David Holmes)
