Suburban Collection Honors General Motors' 100th Anniversary With Oakland
County's 100th Habitat for Humanity House
PONTIAC, Mich., June 6 /PRNewswire/ -- The Suburban Collection is working
on a very special gift to commemorate General Motors' 100th anniversary, but
instead of giving it to the automaker, the company is helping a deserving
Oakland County family.
That's because this anniversary present is a brand-new home that will be
built in conjunction with Habitat for Humanity of Oakland County. A ceremonial
groundbreaking is today at the home site on Ferry Street in Pontiac, and
construction begins Aug. 16 with volunteer construction crews made up of
Suburban Collection and GM employees.
"At The Suburban Collection we value our partnership with GM not only in
the automotive business, but in community service," said Chairman and CEO
David T. Fischer. "We want to say thank you and honor GM's continued
commitment to the community."
The partnership between The Suburban Collection and GM extends back to the
beginning of the Collection, 60 years ago. From a single GM franchise in 1948
to 16 franchises across Michigan and South Florida today, the partnership
continues to grow.
Fischer said dedicating the house to General Motors honors GM's many
community contributions with a lasting and life-changing home that will
benefit a family in need of affordable housing. The home will be the 100th
Habitat for Humanity home built in Oakland County and around the world by the
Oakland County affiliate.
Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian housing ministry
that seeks to eliminate poverty housing and homelessness, and make decent
shelter a matter of conscience and action. The Oakland County affiliate is
headquartered in Pontiac.
"Now, more than ever, families are in need of affordable, safe housing,
and we thank the Suburban Collection and General Motors for a partnership that
is truly making a difference in the community," said Sally LePla, executive
director, Habitat for Humanity of Oakland County. "They are providing the
vehicle that will not only permit one family to transform its future but will
also assist in the transformation of an entire Pontiac neighborhood."
"Home ownership is still a cornerstone of the American dream," said Mark
LaNeve, GM vice president, Vehicle Sales, Service and Marketing. "It is a
great feeling to look at an empty lot today knowing that soon a home will be
built here that provides a deserving family with a place to make their own
American dream a reality."
"On behalf of GM, I thank the Suburban Collection for its generosity and
for 60 years of partnership, and I look forward to many more years of working
together."
"I am very excited to be the soon-to-be owner of a new Habitat home, built
through a partnership with The Suburban Collection and Habitat for Humanity,"
said Amy Perry, Habitat partner family. "This is a life-changing experience,
and I feel a sense of pride and joy in myself, being able to work with the
Suburban Collection, Habitat, family, friends and volunteers. Habitat has
changed my life."
