Father's Day Love and Loss: New Book Explores Doctor's Life After the Death of
His Child
PITTSBURGH, June 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Dr. Dennis Hurwitz knows first-hand
that Father's Day can be particularly difficult for parents who have lost a
child. Eighteen years ago, the plastic surgeon's only daughter was murdered in
the family backyard by her friend with a samurai sword. The case became known
nationally as the "Clockwork Orange Murder" when the killer blamed his actions
on the movie.
For the first time since his teenage daughter's death, Dr. Hurwitz is
speaking out about his experience with loss and love in a new book, The Chase
for Beauty. Written by Robert Mendelson, the narrative nonfiction work
explores how Hurwitz was able to rebuild life for his family and those around
him. An interactive, website community-complete with a video trailer, "Read
and Watch" section, and blog-complements the book and can be accessed at
http://www.thechaseforbeauty.com.
"When Karen died, I lost a whole family," says Hurwitz. "It was all gone.
Everything. There was no more 'Mom and Dad.' Are you still a parent on
Father's Day after your only child has died?"
In discussing his experience, Dr. Hurwitz explores everything from the
role of his Jewish faith, to his eventual decision to adopt children.
Stressing that a personal and professional chase for beauty are intertwined,
he also discusses the creation of his famed Total Body Lift, a procedure that
resulted in widespread media coverage, including appearances on The Discovery
Channel and NBC's TODAY.
According to Dr. Hurwitz, directing energy toward something positive after
Karen's death was "a goal, something to work for. There's no question that
what you do at work and what you do at home are interrelated. They make up our
sense of well-being and self-esteem. You have to work at each level and accept
the challenges and the setbacks."
