NEW YORK, June 19 (Reuters) - Continental Airlines Inc CAL.N> and UAL Corp's United Airlines UAUA.O on Thursday announced a comprehensive plan for global cooperation.

The airlines said they plan to link their networks worldwide and to create revenue opportunities and efficiencies.

Continental also plans to join United in the Star Alliance system and to request that the U.S. Department of Transportation allow it to join United -- along with Lufthansa, Air Canada and six other carriers -- in their established antitrust immunized alliance.
