"On this day 143 years ago, the last slaves in America were notified of their
freedom, thanks to Abraham Lincoln's signing of the Emancipation Proclamation.
Our nation's first Republican President knew the importance of equality in
America and would be proud today of the strides our country has made in civil
rights for all people. Juneteenth is an important reminder of how far our
country has come -- and the path of dedication to freedom, fairness, and
equality for which we continually strive to follow."
