Riesling is Celebrated Coast-to-Coast as Summer's Perfect White Wine
NEW YORK, June 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Just in time for summer, during the week
of June 16th - 22nd, 2008, Wines of Germany and the European Union present the
fourth annual Riesling Week. During the week, restaurants and retailers in
New York, Chicago, San Francisco and Las Vegas will offer special by-the-glass
selections and other food-pairing promotions, making it even easier to enjoy
Rieslings from Germany, Alsace and Austria, the perfect complements to a
warm-weather meal.
European Riesling, known for its incredible versatility and unrivaled
quality, is consistently named as the first choice for white wines by
sommeliers nationwide. The varietal's food-friendly, crisp nature makes it the
ideal wine to pair with all of your favorite summer dishes.
"European Riesling is great with food because of its unique diversity and
complex flavors and spices," said Aldo Sohm, Chef Sommelier of renowned New
York restaurant, Le Bernardin, who was also recently named the "Best Sommelier
in the World 2008" by the World Sommelier Association. "You'll have no
difficulty finding a Riesling style to match whatever dish you might choose."
Over 70 top restaurants in New York, San Francisco, Las Vegas and Chicago
have signed on to promote European Riesling during this national celebration.
Riesling Week promotions will vary around the country, including special food
and wine pairings, tasting menus, flights and by-the-glass selections. The
promotion will also include in-store tastings in select wine retail stores in
the above-mentioned cities.
"We are excited to introduce the fourth year of the very successful
Riesling Week promotion," said Monika Reule, Deutsches Weininstitut (DWI)
Director. "This promotion gives restaurant-goers unparalleled access to
world-class Rieslings from Germany, as well as Austria and Alsace. It enables
both wine novices and aficionados alike the luscious chance to enjoy a variety
of European Rieslings at their favorite restaurants and retailers coast to
coast."
The Riesling Week promotion is part of a three-year "Destination Riesling"
campaign, underwritten by Wines of Germany and the European Union, to market
European Rieslings in the U.S. The campaign seeks to increase interest and
awareness for European Riesling among consumers and the trade.
