Local Spelling Bee National Finalists Honored by Lt. Gov. Quinn in Springfield

CHICAGO, June 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Eighth graders Rose Sloan (River Forest)
and Emily Temple-Wood (Downers Grove), who advanced to the 81st Annual Scripps
National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C., were honored by Lt. Gov. Pat Quinn
and John Hooker, ComEd senior vice president of State, Legislative and
Governmental Affairs at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum in
Springfield.

Sloan, a 13-year-old from Roosevelt Middle School, finished fourth overall
in the nation. This is the highest a female from Illinois has ever finished in
the national competition. Sloan also became the first female to advance to the
national finals two years in a row.
Temple-Wood, an eighth grader at Avery Coonley School in Downers Grove,
made her first appearance in the national finals. Her run ended in the
national quarterfinals.
ComEd paid for all expenses for Sloan, Temple-Wood and families -- air,
hotel and per diem for meals/cabs to travel to Washington, D.C. Estimated cost
is $10,000.
