ATHENS, June 26 (Reuters) - Greece's largest telecommunications group OTE (OTEr.AT) on Thursday appointed Karl-Gerhard Eick, chief financial officer at Deutsche Telekom, to its board of directors after the German group agreed to buy a stake in OTE.

OTE also named Hamid Akhavan, chief executive of D. Telekom's (DTEGn.DE) T-Mobile International unit; Leonidas Evangelidis, a former Greek Ambassador to Germany; and Leonidas Korres to three other vacant positions on the firm's board.

Last month Deutsche Telekom agreed to buy 25 percent plus one share of OTE for about 3.2 billion euros, with 20 percent coming from Greek buyout firm MIG (MRFr.AT), 3 percent from the government and 2 percent off the market. The state will also hold 25 percent plus one share.

Under the deal, each side will propose 5 members on the board, with Deutsche Telekom acquiring management control and the right to choose a chief executive and Greece designating the chairman.

Both Greece and Deutsche Telekom have agreed that current Chief Executive and Chairman Panagis Vourloumis will stay on for a transitional period.

D.Telekom has said it wants to expand its T-Mobile operations through acquisitions. OTE fully controls Greece's largest mobile operator Cosmote, which is also present in Bulgaria, Macedonia, Albania and Romania, with about 15 million customers.
