What: At the request of LAF Chairman and Founder Lance Armstrong,
four former United States Surgeons General collaborated with
the cancer prevention and survivorship community to develop
the National Call to Action on Cancer Prevention and
Survivorship. At the press conference, these four most recent
U.S. Surgeons General will outline the battle plan for the new
war on cancer and the steps that Americans can take to reduce
the risk of developing cancer and improve screening, early
detection, treatment, and survivorship.
Why: More than 1.4 million Americans are diagnosed with cancer each
year, and cancer is now the leading cause of death for
Americans under the age of 85. Cancer is a public health
crisis that carries with it an unsustainable societal and
economic burden. Cancers that can be prevented or detected
early account for at least half of all new cases. Engaging and
empowering all Americans and our policymakers to embrace
cancer prevention and survivorship as a national priority and
to meet the goals outlined in this National Call to Action
will save lives, save money, and improve the lives of the
estimated 12 million Americans living today with cancer.
