HARRISBURG, Pa., July 22 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Forty-two teenagers from across the state have been invited to learn about State Police operations at the Commissioner's Honor Camp next week at the State Police Academy in Hershey, Commissioner Jeffrey B. Miller announced today. The cadets, ages 13-18, were selected from among 1,500 boys and girls who participated in two dozen local Camp Cadet programs around the state last year. Miller said the program was created by former Commissioner Paul J. Evanko in 1998 as a reward for the top two cadets from each program. "This is an excellent opportunity for our troopers to build positive professional relationships with these outstanding teenagers," Miller said. "Local Camp Cadet programs give young people exposure to the criminal justice system from a police cadet's point of view. While participating in the Honor Camp, cadets gain a greater understanding of the Pennsylvania State Police and state government, in addition to building leadership skills." Troopers teach Honor Camp cadets about criminal investigations, police skills, use of force and other law-enforcement topics. The camp includes team problem-solving activities and sports. Visits to the Capitol, Governor's residence, State Police Headquarters and Hershey's Chocolate World also are included in the week's itinerary. Miller said the program begins Sunday, July 27. A graduation ceremony will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 2, at the State Police Academy. Tpr. Joseph P. Nolte of the State Police Bureau of Training and Education coordinates the Honor Camp program.
