UPDATE 1-Journal Communications' quarterly profit beat estimates
(Recasts, adds details)
July 22 (Reuters) - Journal Communications Inc (JRN.N), publisher of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, reported quarterly earnings that beat market expectations, helped by television revenue growth at its Palm Springs, Omaha, Boise and Lansing markets.
Radio revenue for the newspaper publisher, which also owns several radio and television stations, grew in Omaha in the second quarter. Revenue from hyper-local community newspapers surrounding Milwaukee rose too.
Online advertising revenue at both its publishing and broadcast sites was up 15.9 percent to about $4.7 million.
As readers increasingly turn to the Internet as their source for news, online ad revenue has increased for newspaper publishers at the cost of the more lucrative print ad market.
Second-quarter net earnings fell to $9 million, or 16 cents per share from $14.2 million, or 21 cents per share, a year earlier. Revenue fell 5 percent to $140.1 million.
Analysts expected earnings of 14 cents a share, excluding exceptional items, on revenue of $138.6 million, according to Reuters Estimates.
The company said it expects positive revenue trends in the second half of the year due to political and Olympics advertising spending at its television business.
Journal's shares closed at $4.73 Monday on the New York Stock Exchange. (Reporting by S John Tilak in Bangalore; Editing by Bernard Orr)
