LONDON, July 22 (Reuters) - Britain's FTSE 100 .FTSE index is seen opening 28 to 34 points lower on Tuesday, according to financial bookmakers, after results from U.S. companies disappointed investors.

American Express (AXP.N), Apple (AAPL.O) and Texas Instruments TXN.N posted weaker-than-expected results after the bell.

Overnight U.S. stocks slipped as oil turned higher after last week's sharp drop and Merck & Co (MRK.N) and Schering-Plough SGP.N hurt the pharmaceuticals sector.

The UK blue-chip index closed up 27.9 points, or 0.5 percent, at 5,404.3 on Monday. The FTSE 100 has fallen more than 16 percent so far this year.
