CHICAGO, July 22 | Tue Jul 22, 2008 7:56am EDT

CHICAGO, July 22 (Reuters) - Package delivery company United Parcel Service Inc (UPS.N) said on Tuesday its quarterly net profit fell, citing rising fuel costs and a stagnant U.S. economy, which hurt both its domestic and international package segments.

The Atlanta-based company reported quarterly net income of $873 million, or 85 cents, compared with $1.10 billion, or $1.04, a year earlier.

Analysts had on average expected earnings per share for the quarter of 85 cents, according to Reuters Estimates. (Reporting by Nick Carey, editing by Maureen Bavdek)
