GENEVA (Reuters) - The European Union said an offer by the United States to lower a ceiling on its farm subsidies was reasonable and Washington might be able to go further depending on how global trade talks progress.

"This is a reasonable offer at this stage, which will definitely have constraining effects," said Peter Power, a spokesman for EU Trade Commissioner Peter Mandelson.

"It is not the furthest the U.S. could go, but we assume this depends on the remaining negotiations and a balance being achieved in other sectors which we are discussing in these talks," Power said in a statement on Tuesday.
