Turnitin Takes Teachers Beyond Plagiarism Detection With Summer Institute
Program
New Workshop to be Focused on Web-Delivered Instructional Tools for Writing

OAKLAND, Calif., July 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Turnitin(R) today announced
Turnitin Summer Institutes 2008, a pilot program focused on the use of
Turnitin as an instructional tool for teaching, assessing and evaluating
student writing. The free professional development workshops for high school
and college instructors will run Aug. 11-19 at select college campuses in
Northern California, Southern California and North Carolina.
"While Turnitin is known worldwide as the leading originality checking and
plagiarism prevention service, we have seen strong, growing interest in the
integration of our services with the entire process of composition, feedback
and grading for writing-intensive assignments," said Katie Povejsil, vice
president of marketing for Turnitin. "Our new Summer Institute program
illustrates instructional strategies in these areas, and addresses major
challenges in teaching, assessing and evaluating student writing."
Using Turnitin's full suite of web-delivered instructional tools, a team
of instructors led by Summer Institute Curriculum Manager Renee Bangerter,
assistant professor of English at Fullerton College, will provide innovative
lessons that explore practical elements of using the entire Turnitin 100-
percent digital workflow solution, to encourage original writing, make grading
more meaningful and efficient, and facilitate peer review.
"The workshops take Turnitin well beyond plagiarism detection and toward a
writing pedagogy," said Bangerter. "They also encourage teachers to share
"best practices" and strengthen their network of professional contacts,
including college and high school faculty from their local area. Participants
will come away with new instructional insights, new friends and a handbook
with a collection of lessons."
Workshops are designed for high school and college faculty who teach in
any field, but will especially benefit those who assess student learning
through one or more writing assignments. There will be two half-day sessions
held at each location: a morning session for experienced users of Turnitin,
and an afternoon session for newer users.
    Locations and dates:
-- Monday, August 11th, 2008, Santa Clara University campus, Santa Clara,
       CA
-- Thursday, August 14th, 2008, Fullerton College campus, Fullerton, CA
-- Tuesday, August 19th, 2008, Wake Forest University campus, Winston-
       Salem, NC
Two sessions will be offered at each location:
-- 8:00 am - 12:00 pm (for experienced Turnitin users), or
-- 1:00 pm - 5:00 pm (for newer Turnitin users).
A continental breakfast will be served for morning participants from 7:30
- 8:00 am. Lunch is included for both morning and afternoon participants from
