Your Credit Card May Not Pay for That Already Scheduled Vacation if Something
Unexpected Comes Up
CSA Travel Protection offers little-known facts about travel insurance
SAN DIEGO, July 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Traveling in this economy can be risky,
but it doesn't have to be. CSA Travel Protection, a proud member of the United
States Travel Insurance Association (UStiA), shares some little-known facts
about travel insurance. Most importantly, travel insurance covers more trip
cancellation and delay reasons than provided by other types of insurance,
including those offered by consumer credit cards.
According to a recent study, conducted by Avalon Actuarial Inc. for the
UStiA, no other single source provides the full spectrum of coverage and
services that comprehensive travel insurance does. In fact, 85 percent of the
credit cards reviewed in the report did not provide any built-in trip
cancellation insurance*.
"People today are as careful with their money as ever, and they want to
make sure they aren't risking valuable dollars needlessly -- especially when
planning a trip," said Les Maine, CSA Travel Protection president. "Making a
small, but smart, investment in travel insurance gives back more than just
assurance, but can also save consumers money in the long run."
Lesser-known facts about travel insurance include:
-- Travel insurance policies cover a variety of reasons for trip
cancellation and interruption in addition to the standard sickness or injury,
such as attending jury duty, damage to one's home, military obligations and
permanent employment transfers.
-- If traveling alone and hospitalized while on a trip, most plans will
pay for someone to fly to the traveler's location. In addition, if a
vacationer is hospitalized while traveling with children, the plan will cover
costs to return the children home with an attendant.
-- During the covered trip, travelers have 24-hour access to nearly any
type of assistance, including legal referrals, replacement of lost eyeglasses,
consular assistance, travel agency services and lost luggage assistance.
-- Most plans include pre-travel assistance and concierge services that
can provide travelers with information about a destination, assist with
obtaining tickets to events and sites (such as to museums, art galleries and
sporting events), and help with reservations of all types.
-- Some plans also include rental car collision damage coverage, which
can be a substantial savings over purchasing the rental company's damage
waiver.
