Silgan second-quarter earnings rise

NEW YORK, July 23 (Reuters) - Packaging products maker Silgan Holdings Inc (SLGN.O) said on Wednesday its second-quarter earnings rose, helped by cost-control measures and some volume growth.

Net income in the quarter was $33.3 million, or 87 cents a share, up from $26.8 million, or 70 cents a share, a year earlier.

Excluding items, the company posted earnings of 92 cents a share, compared with year-earlier earnings of 74 cents a share. (Reporting by Euan Rocha, editing by Gerald E. McCormick)
