UPDATE 1-Gen-Probe 2nd-quarter net falls, shares rise

LOS ANGELES, July 31 (Reuters) - Gen-Probe Inc Inc (GPRO.O) said on Thursday its second-quarter net income fell 8 percent as record sales of clinical diagnostics products and blood screening tests failed to offset a year-earlier tax gain.

Gen-Probe raised its outlook for full-year 2008 earnings and its shares rose 7 percent in after-hours trading.

The company said net income fell to $24.8 million, or 45 cents per share, from $27 million, or 50 cents per share, in the same 2007 period.

Product sales rose 21 percent to $113.7 million, while total revenue rose 18 percent to $119.8 million.

Gen-Probe raised its full-year earnings forecast to between $1.83 and $1.87 per share, from a previous range of $1.72 to $1.76. The average Reuters Estimates forecast is $1.76 a share.

Shares of Gen-Probe, which closed at $53.32 on Nasdaq, were up 7 percent at $57.10 in after-hours trading. (Reporting by Deena Beasley; editing by Carol Bishopric),
