Elie Wiesel Foundation for Humanity to Honor French President Nicolas Sarkozy
on September 22

NEW YORK, July 31 /PRNewswire/ -- The Elie Wiesel Foundation for Humanity
will honor Nicolas Sarkozy, President of the French Republic, with its annual
Humanitarian Award at a gala dinner in New York City on September 22nd.
The Elie Wiesel Foundation for Humanity was established by Marion and Elie
Wiesel in 1986 soon after he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace. Its
mission, rooted in the memory of the Holocaust, is to combat indifference,
intolerance and injustice through international dialogue and youth-focused
programs to promote acceptance, understanding and equality.
President Sarkozy will be recognized for his global efforts to support
war-torn countries. He has pledged millions of dollars in aid to Africa,
including a 500 million Euro economic package to spur development, and created
a global initiative for agriculture. He has shown great leadership on the
Darfur crisis, and has recently doubled France's aid to rebuild Afghanistan,
totaling $165 million over the next two years. Also, of great importance to
the Elie Wiesel Foundation is his determination to improve US-French relations
and his consistent support of Israel.
"President Sarkozy is a humanitarian with deep concern for those in need
and has contributed greatly to impoverished countries," said Elie Wiesel. "The
President's compassion and sincerity in these efforts is admirable."
The Humanitarian Award was created to recognize outstanding individuals
who dedicate their time to fighting indifference, intolerance and injustice
and whose accomplishments are consistent with the goals of the Foundation.
Previous recipients of the Foundation's Humanitarian Award have included First
Lady Laura Bush, then First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton, King Juan Carlos of
Spain, President George H.W. Bush, First Lady Danielle Mitterand and most
recently, Oprah Winfrey in 2007.
