WHAT: Several hundred charter school parents, teachers and supporters
will line the steps of the Los Angeles Unified School District
(LAUSD) headquarters to demand equal funding for charter
schools. The gathering will coincide with a meeting of the
LAUSD Board of Education, which is expected to vote on a $7
billion dollar bond measure proposed for the November ballot
and determine how much bond money will be allocated for
       charter schools.

WHEN: Thursday, July 31, 2008, 1:30 p.m. (Board meeting starts at
       2:00 p.m.)

WHERE: Los Angeles Unified School District
       333 South Beaudry Avenue
       Los Angeles, CA 90017

WHO: The event will feature several hundred parents and charter
school supporters. Spokespersons will include Caprice Young,
president and CEO of the California Charter Schools
       Association, among others.

WHY: The Los Angeles Unified School District has been short changing
charter schools on space to house their students. Charter
schools already get about $3,000 less per student than the
district receives in funding. Charter schools are demanding
their fair share of the new $7 billion bond measure proposed
for the November ballot. The California Charter Schools
Association has pushed for stronger bond language on behalf of
       charter schools to ensure:
--10 percent of the bond funds to be allocated to charter
          schools.
--Smart financing which would include lease payments, matching
funds and loan guarantees for charter schools.
--Good governance policies to allow schools to build and equip
          their own campuses.
